Sussex County postpones 'Caroling on the Circle'

Last year Caroling on the Circle in Georgetown was canceled because of COVID, and this year weather is the spoiler although the event is only postponed.

The Christmas event and food drive was originally slated for Monday evening, Dec. 6, but was postponed because of heavy wind and some rain in the forecast, Sussex County spokesman Chip Guy said.

The new date is Monday, Dec. 13, at 6:30 p.m.

"Clearly we are disappointed in having to make this decision, but it is done with the safety of the public and our performers on stage first and foremost in mind," he wrote in an email.

The Christmas celebration features traditional English and Spanish carols, as well as performances by local singing artists Kevin Short and Ed Shockley, and performers from the El Centro Cultural group.

The caroling event is free, but the county asks people to bring nonperishable food to donate. This year is set to be the 38th annual food drive.

Donations were down last year when the caroling portion was canceled. The county said it collected 15,000 food items last year for distribution to area food pantries and churches, down from about 30,000 the year before.
